** NEWLY POSTED - COMPETITION RULES **

General

• All Canadian entrants must have a current HPAC membership/insurance.
• Foreign entrants must have temporary HPAC insurance, available at registration.
• All competitors must have a minimum HPAC Intermediate rating, or foreign equivalent. If a pilot does not have the necessary rating, it is his/her responsibility to verify their proficiency to the Meet Director and/or Safety Director. An instructor or advanced pilot’s recommendation will be considered as verification.
• Helmet, parachute and certified glider are mandatory equipment.
• Pilots are subject to penalty or disqualification if they break Transport Canada rules. ie – unauthorized entry into controlled airspace, proximity to clouds, etc.
• Pilots are subject to penalty or disqualification if they break Sun Peaks Resort rules. These rules include:
- Minimum clearance of 500’ required when overflying chair lifts
- Landings not permitted at Resort, only in designated LZ
• Pilots must be hooked in and ready to go before stepping into the launch line-up.
• Standard rules for calling a “push” will apply. All pilots ahead of the push will have 30 seconds of uninterupted safe conditions to launch before they must step aside and go to the back of the line. The pilot calling the push will have 30 seconds of uninterupted safe launch conditions after which time he will be zero’d for the day.
• Pilots are urged to avoid or resolve any disputes with land owners for outfield landings. Unresolved disputes will be penalized at 10% for the day.
• Protests will be made to the Meet Director. A fee of $50 is required for protests, refundable if the protest is successful. The Meet Director can make the determination himself or appoint 2 additional people to the protest committee to assist with the ruling.
• The Safety Committee will have the authority to stop a task or prevent a pilot from flying if deemed to be unsafe. If a task is stopped while in progress, the scores will be calculated to 15 minutes before the time of cancellation. It is the individual pilot’s own responsibility to judge their own safety at all times. If an individual pilot feels that conditions are becoming unsafe during a task, he should land as quickly and safely as possible.
• All rules are subject to review and amendment at any time by the Meet Director.
• GPS’s must be turned in as soon as possible after landing and no later than 8:00 PM (or designated time). If it is not possible to turn in the GPS on time, the pilot is responsible for notifying the scorer prior to the deadline.
• Morning Pilots Meetings are mandatory. Pilots meetings will be at 8:45 AM at the Meet HQ, Masa’s.

Open Class and Kingpost Class

• Open and Kingpost Classes are FAI Cat 2 and HPAC Class A sanctioned. As such, the FAI and HPAC competition rules will govern.
• All competitors in the Open and Kingpost Classes will be scored together. All flexwing competitors of the Open and Kingpost Classes will be eligible for the Open Class First, Second and Third Place awards.
• Kingpost class competitors will also be scored separately and will also be eligible for Kingpost Class awards.
• Rigid wing competitors will also be included in the scoring, but will receive a 10% daily point deduction.
• Rigid wing competitors will not be eligible for the Open class awards or Canadian Champion trophy or title, but will be eligible for the prestigious Rigid Wing award.
• Foreign competitors will be eligible for scoring and awards as above but will not be eligible for the Canadian Champion trophy or title.
• GPS’s are mandatory.

Sports Class (Floater Class)

• The Sports class is not sanctioned, as above, and rules will be adjusted based on feedback and skill level of entrants at the event. Rules will be clarified at the start of the event based on interest and participation.
• Competitors must have a maximum of 50 hours at time of registration. Exceptions might be made at the Meet Director or Sport Class Director’s discretion.
• GPS’s are strongly encouraged.
• Scoring will be based on one or more of the following events. These will be announced at the start of each day:
- Race around turnpoints (close to LZ)
- Duration
- Spot Landing
• Sport Class Pilots may launch at any time. Sport Class pilots are encouraged to launch before the launch window opens for the Open/Kingpost class.
• If launching during the Open/Kingpost class launch window, Sports Class pilots are asked to give priority to the Open/Kingpost class.

ALL THE OLD INFO IS HERE:

Sun_Peaks_Village_from_Launch_0.jpg
The Flying Site:
Sun Peaks has played host to numerous prior hang gliding competitions, including the Canadian Nationals, Sun Peaks team meets and Speed Gliding competitions. It is a proven cross country flying site, which appeals to intermediate and advanced pilots alike. Sun Peaks is one of the higher sites in Canada, with a launch altitude of 6800 ft, providing consistent soaring conditions right off launch. Cross country flights are possible in all directions, providing the task committee with a great variety of potential open and closed tasks. We have access to a large, safe LZ within easy glide of the launch and there are generally good XC landing options in the area.

Sun Peaks Resort will operate the Burfield chair lift exclusively for the Canadian Nationals and has confirmed that chair lift operation hours will be arranged to best suit the competition launch schedule (Lift will run at 10:30 AM daily). The chair lift is a fun way to get people and equipment efficiently up to launch and eliminates the need for arranging rides up the mountain.

Pilot Qualifications: HPAC insurance will be mandatory for all competitors. Temporary insurance will be available at the comp for international competitors. The Meet will be open to all pilots with an HPAC rating (or equivalent) of Intermediate and above. Acceptance of anybody not possessing this qualification will be at the discretion of the Meet Director and/or Safety Director.

Sun Peaks and Area: Sun Peaks is a very picturesque resort town which is well known in the winter for skiing, but is also a lively and scenic town in the summer months. The self contained village has all the basic amenities, including accommodations, dining, shopping, pubs, etc. Local attractions in the summer include an 18 hole golf course and driving range, swimming pool, live music, hiking, mountain biking, tennis, horseback riding and more. The nature of the Sun Peaks Resort venue provides a great holiday experience for pilots and non-pilots alike. For additional amenities, the city of Kamloops is only 45 minutes away.

Sun Peaks is within reasonable driving distance for most competitors from Western Canada and North Western USA. Vancouver, Calgary and Seattle have the nearest international airports, with Vancouver being about 4 hours driving time from Sun Peaks. Kamloops airport and Kelowna airport are closer and also offer limited commercial flights.

Accommodations: Many types of accommodations to fit all budgets are available, all within close proximity to each other. A wide variety of hotel and condo accommodation is available for rent at discounted off-season prices. Click here for all the details: ACCOMMODATIONS. The proximity of the accommodations and “village atmosphere” of Sun Peaks will provide a sociable après-fly experience for pilots, family and friends. For the die-hard campers, there will be some rudimentary arrangements at Ian McArthur’s Sun Peaks B&B or full service camp grounds further off site.

Entry fee: Entry fee’s have been confirmed as follows: Cash payment at the event for Open and Kingpost Class (August 15 registration) $175. ** Just Announced: Sport Class entry fee reduced to $135 ** For pre-payment by Paypal, go to www.paypal.com and make payment to rherten@gmail.com. Your entry fee includes scoring, awards dinner, trophies, cash prizes, give-aways and T-shirts. Note T-Shirts will only be guaranteed for entrants who have pre-registered/pre-paid, but we'll make every effort to accomodate the rest. Chair lift tickets of $16/day will be payable directly to the Resort.

Event Staff: Ralph Herten (Vancouver, BC) is the Meet Director and co-organizer. Ralph has been a regular competitor in the Canadian Nationals for almost ten years and has also flown or competed at various events within the US, Mexico and Australia. He has been involved in organizing other hang gliding competitions and is familiar with the local flying scene, having been a past resident of the Kamloops and Sun Peaks area.
Co-organizer Ian McArthur (Kamloops, BC) has been flying for over twenty years and competing in competitions for most of this time. He has had extensive experience organizing prior competitions, including several previous Canadian Nationals at Sun Peaks and East End Saskatchewan. Ian has been a resident of the Kamloops and Sun Peaks areas for 40 years and is well connected with the Sun Peaks Resort and surrounding community.
Leif Hanson (Edmonton, Alberta) has accepted the nomination as Safety Director. Leif is a well known and respected pilot in the Canadian hang gliding scene and has been a regular participant at the Canadian Nationals and other hang gliding comps throughout Western Canada and NW USA.
Tonya Torshin (Vancouver, BC) will be scoring the event. Tonya is a paraglider pilot who has scored many previous competitions, including the Lumby Air Races.

Yesterday was another

Yesterday was another beautiful day at Sun Peaks. The forecast called for lighter south winds and we wanted to call a small out and return task to make sure everybody got back for scoring and awards on time. On launch it became apparent that the winds were somewhat stronger than forecast and we changed the plan to a small downwind dash to Little Fort. Forest fires are visible all over the area from launch and there were a few on our flight path, so it was important to maintain altitude or fly clear of the areas to avoid conflict with fire fighting aircraft. I believe 10 made it into goal, which was a great way to wrap up the comp. This was our fourth valid day out of seven and we flew on every single day. Tonya and Terry got busy crunching the final results at Masa's and we had the scores in time for dinner. Winner of the Open class and new Canadian Champion is Jeff Rempel flying his Airborne C4. Jeff also won the day again and finished with a commanding lead. Conrgats Jeff! Second place was Rob Clarkson on his WW T2 and third was Ross Hunter on his Moyes Litespeed. Winner of the kingpost class and new kingpost champ is none other than Tyler Borradaile flying a WW U2. Second and third went to Mark Kowalski on a U2 and David Bacon flying a Seedwings. Winner of the Sports class was up and comer Jesse Rempel. Congrats to all! The wrap up party was a good time with lots of prizes for all from our generous sponsors. The Kiltlifters band did not disappoint. We'll be posting official scores and photos shortly.

Another beautiful day in the

Another beautiful day in the interior. Last night there was a wicked lighting storm in the area which set off a bunch of forest fires. A couple of the guys actually witnessed lightning strikes setting trees on fire on Mount Todd. Thankfully the resort staff were on it and had the fires on the hill out by 3 am. The morning was cooler than previous days and we called Sun Peaks launch again today. The wind forecast was slightly less than yesteray, but still enough to get our interest. 18 kt at 6000' but decreasing at upper altitudes. Forecasted lapse rate of 3 degrees per 1000. We called the task quickly and opened the launch window at 12:30 in an attempt to get everybody in the air early. The task was an 82 km downwind dash to Clearwater, same as yesterday. Our wind techinician, Gaetan, attempted a launch to test conditions and was quickly flipped upside down and into a tree on the hill before he had a chance to correct for the crosswind. He was OK but it caused us some anxious moments and quite a bit of aluminum on his glider. Fortunately the rest of the launches today were uneventful and most of the field got in the air and had a good flight. John McClintock was the only one in to goal today and won the day, despite a 10% penalty on his stiffy wing. Jeff Rempel was second and a bunch of us were pretty close behind at varying points betwen Barrier and Clearwater. Tyler Borradaile put in a good effort, winning the day in the kingpost class. Sports class didn't fly today due to the strong conditions. I think Jeff Rempel still has a healthy lead and is definitely the man to beat tomorrow. New forest fires were quite visible burning along the route towards Clearwater today and were noticably larger on the retrieve back to Sun Peaks. We may need to take the fires into account for our final task tomorrow. Wind up party at Masa's with Kiltlifters band afterwards - should be a great wind-up. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=101008&id=689532780&l=4bc9a96f30

The day started off looking

The day started off looking good. We called the launch at Sun Peaks and loaded up at the chair lift at 10:30. Forecast winds for 2:00 pm were 22 knots out of the SW and increasing, so we called an 82 km task to Clearwater and opened the launch window at 1:30 to get everybody off before the launch conditions got too gnarly. News crews were out on launch interviewing and filming today. Ian McArthur was seconds from launching when we put a temporary hold on launch operations to re-assess conditions. After 1/2 hour the safety committee determined that wind conditions were getting too strong for safe launches and penetration to the LZ 5 km's away. The day was called and most pilots decided to pack up and head down the hill. Ian launched and flew to Barrier, thus earning the un-official title of "Skydog" (Luck dog?) for the day. 4 others launched and ended up soaring locally and landing at the Whitecroft LZ. I was eager to get some airtime today, having sat out yesterday with a minor shoulder injury, which has since been massaged and medicated into submission. The flight proved to be very interesting with headwinds exceeding 50 km/hr and choppy conditions. I was happy the safety committee called the day. After landing and having a few cold ones with the other brave souls I chased off to retrieve Ian, who was enjoying some cold beverages at the Chinook golf course north of Barrier. I think Ian was disappointed that we cancelled the task. He figured we could have made it to Clearwater in about 53 minutes. I think everybody is enjoying their holiday in Sun Peaks. The temperature today got well into the thirties and the patios were well attended in the afternoon. High hopes for lighter winds tomorrow!

We made the call to fly at

We made the call to fly at Sun Peaks for the first time today. The weather has been looking great but we were still a bit concerned about the North component in the upper level wind forecast. The main Sun Peaks launch faces South. There has been a lot of interest in the event by the Resort staff and guests and it was nice to finally be able to tell everybody that it was actually going to happen on site. Chair lift operations went smoothly and we got everybody up to launch and set up in time to call a 1:30 launch and a 124 km task to Little Fort and back. Unfortunately only about 2/3 of the field got away before the wind turned on us and the rest were stranded and eventually packed up. The ones that did get away were in for some great flying. Nobody made goal, but Jeff won the day again by making it to the turnpoint and most of the way back. Second and third went to Mark Kowalsky and Tyler Borradaile, both flying kingposted U2's. (Well done guys!) Jeff said he was in the air 5.5 hours! There were many other long flights, including many personal bests in the Sports class. I didn't get to fly today as I had torn my rotator cuff in a landing mishap yesterday. I got some good advice and medical attention thanks to Mark Kowalski's brother Glen, who is a GP, and wife Kathie who is a massage therapist, so hopefully tomorrow I'll be back in the game. Forecast for tomorrow is looking great, with a high of 34 predicted in Sun Peaks.

Day 3 and the First Official

Day 3 and the First Official Day. Once again we were faced with a tough call at the morning pilots meeting. Everybody is really keen to start flying at Sun Peaks Resort but the weather gods were calling for a northerly wind again and we were forced to send everybody back to Oscars, as a North wind at Sun Peaks makes for very unfavourable launch conditions. Once again there were high clouds and some smoke in the air once we got to Savona, but our luck was about to change. The skies cleared up and the thermals started rolling in, so we quickly called a 92 km task up Deadmans valley, back to launch and west to Basils Bump (Cache Creek) and back to the International LZ. Everybody bailed off launch soon after the window opened at 1:30 and most pilots got up. It was a tough go North to the first turnpoint with a 30 km headwind at times. Many landed along the way in Deadman valley. A few of us pushed on to Basils and only Jeff Rempel made goal today. Second place was Greg Kendall from California and Rob Clarkson was a close third, only 9 km from goal. The kingpost class had a tough time with the headwinds today and Christine took won the day, making the first turnpoint and landing part way back. There are now 6 entrants in the sports class. A smaller task was called and Cecilia made it closest to the first turnpoint before turning back. Right now we have 28 competitors signed up. Tyler Boradale is joining the fun tomorrow and will be flying my U2 and rumour has it Jim Scoles is on his way so we could get up to 30 entrants by the end of the week. Photos at:

The forecast this morning

The forecast this morning was good but we chose not to fly at Sun Peaks due to a forecasted north wind. Turned out to be a good call as the clouds didn't break as predicted and we ended up flying at Oscars in Savona. We called a 92 km task up deadman valley, back to launch, west to basils bump and back to International LZ. Unfortunately the longest distance was about 6 or 7 km, so the task might have been slightly overcalled! Everybody is happy to be tied for first today! It actually turned out to be a fun day and everybody ended up at the Fox and Hound in Kamloops afterwards. We had one mishap today with a pilot landing downwind in the crash pad and dislocating his shoulder. Fortunately he was well looked after and should be OK. Registration/Practice Day:

Registration/Practice Day: Good to see a lot of old friends today. Rob Clarkson and the Alberta gang showed up this morning and helped us re-decorate meet HQ in style. Rob's Captain Canada sail is now proudly displayed in Masa's. Ian's spare Climax is also suspended in front of Masa's in the main day lodge. Lot's of interest from the staff and guests at the resort. Unfortunately we called off the flying at Sun Peaks for the practice day today due to overcast skies. Some pilots chose to fly at Savona with limited success. A few of us tuned up our gliders in the village today. My competitive instincts got the better of me and I decided to fly the Talon instead of the U2 this week. I dusted it off and got it ready today. We wrapped up at Masa's tonight with a welcome speach, videos and GPS clinic. So far we have entrants from Ontario, Alberta, BC, California and Washington. Game on tomorrow!

Checked in to my place in

Checked in to my place in Sun Peaks late Thursday night and ran around most of today getting things organized. The Resort staff are super helpful and excited to have us here. People have been arriving throughout the day and getting registered and organized. We have a big group from Ontario which we haven't seen in years, so very good to see. My arch-rival Kawalski has arrived with a U2 which is even more pimped out than mine! Maybe time to dust off the Talon again... Jon Orders showed up and is pumped to take the crown. He's ditching his Sting 3 and moving up to a racy C4 to make sure he has the edge. Game on! Jon is one happy camper, as he got a spiffy new T-Shirt before he even finished registering. Ian is hard at work flipping pancakes at his B&B already. Meet headquarters is at Masa's, where they've hung up a glider in the main lobby and are in the process of decking out with posters and banners for us. Rob Clarky is showing up tomorrow with his Captain Canada sail, which is going to be proudly displayed at Masa's. Launch director Peter Warnes checked in today and started taking early payment for his services. (He is being paid in beer!) The forecast is looking great, so there's a lot of anticipation: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/cabc0339
Practice day and main registration/reception is tomorrow. Day 1 is Sunday. Stay tuned!
