The Santa Cruz Flats Race 2009 is on!

Lasy year's most popular competition has changed dates to benefit from lingering monsoonal moisture that will hopefully bring cumulus this year. The dates are September 20-26 with a practice day on the 19th.

Assessment - the Santa Cruz Flats Race

Assessment - the Santa Cruz Flats Race -

Is the Francisco Grande Golf Resort a good place to hold a hang gliding meet? I think so, but it takes a whole bunch of pilots thinking so to make for a well attended competition.

First off it is a great idea to hold a hang gliding meet at a small resort so that everyone can be together and socialize with everyone else before and after the tasks. Everyone stays at the hotel (with a reduced room rate), and eats and drinks at the restaurant and bar. This makes for a lively community.

Not a record, but worth documenting. During the Santa Cruz Flats race. Actual distance would be about 8km larger to accommodate the start circle. Speed recorded is taken from the start circle.

Party in the Big House - 2008 Santa Cruz summary

Party in the Big House - 2008 - Party in the Big House - 2008

I'm back home after a very fun and successful trip to Arizona. It was disappointing to be so busy and not have internet access while I was down there. I did get a chance every morning to write up a blog post / log book entry, and I'll be publishing the stories this week along with photos. It's all in the past now, but I'll go along in chronological order...

Tuesday Morn

Sorry for no blog posts! Time sure flies when you're flying.

The meet is going great....I think there is almost 63 pilots and the resort here is packed. The flying has been 'good' but not as good as last year unfortunately. The conditions have been light....light lift and more wind than last year. It still makes for challenging conditions.

Results are here

2nd Task - Rhombus

2nd Task - Rhombus - Light winds, dust devils, super switchy conditions. Conrad landed down-wind fast and turtled rapidly. More soon.
